While you are probably right, but the real problem is that the tripod 
threads belong in the main camera body.  Putting the tripod
socket threads in a part that is then welded, glued, or otherwise affixed to 
something that is not properly connected to the main
mass of the camera is just plain wrong.

And to the person that said ( implied, inferred, otherwise demeaned) that 
the mechanical part was probably designed by electrical
engineers....   In the old days, we ALL had to take materials and mechanical 
design.  It is the new graduates who study only in
front of a computer, and never actually handle real life 
parts/designs/problems.

You obviously have not looked at the way the base plate is built.  It would
be easy to crank a tripod screw up enough to break the frame.
