I laughed at the turkey episode myself, but turkeys can fly for short 
distances.  In my working days, we drove a two-lane blacktop lined with tall 
pine trees.  I spooked a group of wild turkeys on the roadside once, and 
they cleared the pine trees from a standing takeoff.  They can certainly fly 
if provoked.
