Robert,

Yes I am using the cartridges.  Part of the problem is I don't print
that often.  Recently I've been giving prints away to charity (that's
been a lot of fun btw) so it might be my excuse to print regularly.  For
most of my b&w printing I prefer the laser printer at work.  I've
ordered a cleaning kit for the 1280 printhead from a vendor.  If that
gets the printhead cleaned then I'll try it again for a spell.
Otherwise I'll have to look for another printer.

I've used a 1280 for more thna 4 years and it never clogs.   Are you
using 
the Epson T007 and T009 ink cartidges?
