Thanks to Howard for his advice.  Actually, I found that the problem  
was otherwise:  the jpeg I was trying to load was 5.9mb and the  
maximum size per photo is 5mb.  So, I reduced the jpeg image size to  
3.3mb and it loaded fine.

I have not been able to upload ANY photos to the gallery using  
Safari, always encountering the same problem as yours. When I queried  
Brian Reid about it, he acknowledged the problem and suggested I do  
as he does and use Firefox with my Mac. I did so and files upload  
successfully.
