Then again, *not* >using an IR filter might improve shadow gradations in existing-light >B&W > >--Peter I've had a couple of shots with the 35/1.4 ASPH that had noticeably more flare with the filter on; a sort of large diffuse patch in the center of the image when the sun was just out of the frame. With the filter off it didn't happen. Sorry I can't show that, as I deleted the poorer picture immediately. Maybe I'll try to cause the problem again in a more controlled fashion. In general, outdoor pictures seem OK for the most part with the filter off, but I usually leave it on unless I know that a) IR won't degrade the image and b) the filter might harm the image. B&W images seem readily adjustable whichever way I take them, and while filtered images should be less sharp, I haven't noticed enough of a difference to matter. So I take the pictures intended for B&W with or without filter. Usually, since I have the filters on for colour, the filters stay on for B&W. Since I rarely am that prescient, I usually just leave the filter on when walking around. :-) >Henning wrote: >>and some folks may note that the captions on the photos are reversed >>as to which pictures and data are with filter and which without. -- * Henning J.
