OK, OK, I broke down and got a card reader ($12 @ Radio Shack) and it  
works just fine. Thanks for all the testimonials to this method. No  
mention of whether any of you initially did as I did, and what Leica  
obviously intended, and connected the camera directly to the computer  
with the supplied USB cable. If not, why not? And if so, have you had  
the same problem as I did?

I'm still curious WHY simply connecting the camera doesn't work, and  
whether Leica has addressed this.
