Len,

You don't need a rom version and you don't really need the APO version of 
the 2.0 Extender with the 280/2.8 lens. The 1.4 Extender will give you a 
remarkably sharp 400mm lens on the 280.

The 1.4 extender will not work on most early R lenses and won't work on the 
SL and SL2 cameras if my memory serves.
