It used to be called "Bottleneck", because in the early days they wood slip the neck of a broken bottle over their fingers to play, today its usually a hollow metal cylinder. The best living slide guitarist is probably Ry Cooder - his album with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt ( a sort of slide guitarist from India), called "A Meeting by the River" is a delight, and highly recommended.
