Yesterday his pro-bono attorney requested that she be removed from his upcoming trial, due to the intransigence of her client. The judge agreed, and told Milton Street that he would have to get along with the replacement attorney--or else. My heart goes out to the replacement. Let's see: the federal case involves corruption at the Philadelphia airport, influence peddling, and a variety of other charges. In addition, Milton was jailed last week in New Jersey for...unpaid parking violations. After blowing off several court appearances for about $1700 in fines, the judge issued a bench warrant for his arrest. The new fines and penalties totaled more than $3000. So he kicked off his Philadelphia mayoral campaign from a jail near his New Jersey residence. When he was appointed to the Philadelphia Gas Works (a renowned patronage trough), he was found to owe PGW thousands in unpaid gas bills. In Philadelphia, corruption is a source of civic pride. Last year I heard Vincent Fumo (another Philadelphia pol who's just been indicted) introduced at a civic event. The presenter unrolled a scroll with Fumo's accomplishments; Fumo replied, "that's nothing--you should see my FBI file!" However, Milton Street makes Curley and Daley look like pikers. Or maybe it is .... It's time for Philadelphia's mayor, John Street, to step down. There's a wide range of contenders to fill his shoes. One of them is Milton Street -- the mayors own brother. Despite being under federal inditement and not even living in the state, Milton's the media's favorite because -- well, he's so incredibly odd. He had a noon rally today threatening to pull out of the race if 5,000 people didn't show up. 150 showed up, and 40 reporters. True to form, he had a piano player tickling the ivories while he spoke, then he hauled a coffin out on stage with him, then he started preaching (quoting the bible, waving his arms), then he'd lean on the coffin for a while, and then, overcome by the spirit -- he burst into song. After the rally he did a duet with some guy from WIP radio. Oh yeah. My photos: http://www.asc.upenn.edu/usr/cassidy/pix/2007/2007%2D03%2D01%2Dms/images .html
