Subject: [Leica] not entirely OT: the recurrent dilemma

I have both the 24-70 and 70-200 lenses. The 70-200 f2.8L IS is by far
the best. Wide open it vignettes very substantially which was a
disappointment - you'll notice it on your 5D as I do on my 1Ds Mk II.
However, it's a VERY useful lens and it's the one most often on my 1Ds
with the exception of the Leica 100 APO.

I like the 24-70 less well. It's BIG and the lens hood makes it even
bigger. And you NEED the lens hood.

For me the size of the Canon "small" lenses - the primes and the
wide-normal zooms is the reason I love the M8. They are just vast.
Even the f1.4 50 is big and it's a lens that I'm deeply disappointed
in. Of course my comparison is to the Noct or the Summicron both of
which make the Canon look deeply second rate. Also it's autofocus is
SLOW.

Above 70mm the 1Ds is my tool of choice. It's just wonderful for
telephoto use and macro use - the places where the SLR shines. But
wider than 70mm I'm very very happy with my first few weeks with the
M8. Can't wait to begin doing "Game Day" shots with it at Spring
Training next month!

I can't mount the 16-35 f2.8L so I haven't tried it. At least I don't
think I can.

Hope this is useful.
