LR will download the images and either copy them to the library or place
them in a known location and reference them from there.  This is a choice
 presented in the LR Import dialog.  I always do the latter so that
Bridge/PS can see/use them and backup is easier.   And since the M8 shoots
DNG, the metadata is written to the file always (no sidecar file) and thus
portable.

LR can also just import a folder and do the same as with a card.  LR is
smart enough to know if a card has been inserted and do the right thing,
else it just gives you a "select" dialog to pick a folder.

LR can have multiple libraries (i.e. For a year) and work with them easily
(although I'm going to really focus on making this a bit easier in the next
version).
