I think that it is probably OK.  If I got Vista,  I'd get Home  Premium.   
The basic doesn't support all the goodies.  Best Buy  is showing an 
eMachines 
820 with a Pentium D  and a 250gig drive for  $544.
 
I'm not sure a local shop can match that.
