Always the compromise: I used to make my images 600 in max length,  
but really they seemed too small to fully "evaluate". Comments then  
were: most of us, or at least those with interest in Photography have  
larger screens now, so I upped the ante a bit. For my Japan page  
recently, I made the images 1200 wide and 900 tall for verticals. I  
think they look great that way, but not if you are using a 12 or 15  
inch screen ;-)
