It'll certainly be interesting to see how these new models perform once they're out in the marketplace. You're right of course that it just isn't just megapixels that make the image. Still the specs look most interesting with good features likely to appeal to many. The Panasonic cameras on which the Leicas are based get good marks - for a P&S - but the poor performance in low light ruins them for me. It seems the market wants more pixels where I want less noise :-( I have excellent A4 prints from 5 and very good from 3.3 megapixel cameras. 10 megapixels is rarely necessary in my experience unless vast prints are required. I would be much more likely to buy one if the advances resulted in a 5 megapixel camera with low noise rather than a 10 megapixel camera with useless high iso settings. FWIW I have photographed similar scenes on my Mamiya 7 6x7 camera and EOS 1Ds, the scan of the Mamiya using a Nikon 8000 scanner are 271megabyte TIFF files, compared to the 14-20 megabyte RAW files from the Canon. There is more detail on these scans but it is only a little, probably not double and certainly not 10 to 15 times more. Also I can do about 4 scans in an evening that I find satisfactory:-( Frank PS to old friends on the list sorry to not be in touch this summer I've been otherwise occupied and have suspended the list or bulk deleted the posts. Will be suspending my list subscription again soon.
