I for one will enter, but feel that the idea of a populist vote has the danger of rapidly deteriorating into something which will reflect current, ever-shifting LUG views as opposed to genuine merit (not that the two are necessarily distinct !). I think that your problem amounts to how to reconcile the two. Having an "elite" group of, say three, judges known only to you and who are changed periodically as Ted says, with concensus voting and comments offers the best solution. Maybe - in order to save the judges' time - the LUG should be allowed to rate the photos submitted and only the top ten passed to the judges for adjudication. You could/should also allow the judges to choose from among the remainder a small number that they felt had merit - the LUG doesn't always get it right! ;-) Regards, Peter Dzwig PS AJAX IS a lot better and easier, honestly!! Actually come to think of it my suggestion might help your problem let the LUG see the current voting (fine) but keep the judges' voting/discussions offline (but we'll take that offline perhaps!)
