Mehrdad,
Yes, Nikon USA is especially hard on non USA Nikon equipment and will not
fix it even for payment.  However, Hoppy lives in the great down under and
hopefully they are a somewhat more consumer friendly company than Nikon US.
As to break down, I am not sure that digitals break more often.  Shutters
appear to, but then they undergo far more cycles as the "roll" of film comes
in hundreds of exposures instead of maxing at 36 or so if you bulk loaded.

But, the manufacturers are doing all kinds of things to avoid warrenty
claims like impact sensors to show high G's on the camera and using
microscopes to detect corrosion to claim abuse by the consumer to avoid the
warranty.  These are true at least for the Atlanta regional repair
facilities, YMMV.
