The vertical seems to me to be the stronger image, most of the reasons for which have already been stated, but I'm not sure that for HPI the horizontal wouldn't be a better shot. I hear far too many comments to the effect that photographers and aid groups pick the poorest of the poor and craft images of them very carefully, just to make things look as bad as humanly possible, with the intent of prying money out of people. The other people on the right, and the addition of yet another underfed dog, seem to suggest that this isn't just a single family in poverty, but that this is simply life in the community. I've spent too much time in the newspaper world. There's an abstract "Best Photograph" concept for photographers to argue about ( ;-> ) , and then there's the practical reality that which photo is best usually has to take into account what the story is or what the shot's to be used for.... (and then there are the layout issues and the idiots doing the cropping...) -- R.
