I went about it a slightly different way.

I noticed that when the LS30 was switched on the sledge containing
the mirror moved to the front of the unit and then moved to the back.
By switching the unit one, waiting for a short time, and then
switching it off I could stop this movement with the sledge near the
front. It took a few attempts because I seem to remember that the
sledge continued moving for a short while after switching off.

With the mirror now positioned near the front I could reach it with a
cotton bud soaked in Isopropyl alcohol and use that to clean the it.
