Thanks Tina, as Greg said your recommendation is authoritative. I found the
book on-line (not sure if it's acceptable to mention the amazing seller),
"Black & White Photography Techniques with Adobe Photoshop (Paperback)", and
it's amazingly cheap at ~USD22 for a book with Photoshop in its title! I'm
sending my order off today.

It must be a great reference. Based on you posts about scanning on the list
I suspect that you could do a book on scanning that would also be a great
reference.
