Jim,
         The fungus looks to me like a member of the group of fungi called 
polypores.  Your photo looks like a "hen of the woods",  I have seen these 
in Dean and DeLucca.  Unfortunately I am not an expert, so I might be wrong 
and therefore would advise against eating it.
