The idea of a RFID chip would be feasible, as it would allow ANY lens to be 
converted, without a lot of mumbo jumbo.  Just find a
place to stick it, glue it on, and off you go.  No special kits.  Size?  
1/16 the size of your little finger nail..... the glue?
About the size of a drop of water.  Pretty efficient.   The interior of the 
camera must accommodate the chip, but the distances are
small, the power therefore small, and you would only need to set it once for 
each time the lens is taken off the camera.... it would
not need to be "on" all the time.

Yes, I would prefer the idea of mechanical coupling, but how would you do 
this for lenses made 50+ years ago?  It would take special
retrofit kits, one for each lens and variety thereof.  I do not think so, 
but then again....
