Don.. the D50 "kit" is not a bad idea.  It is pretty cheap.  But I would 
like to know my other options.....
The D50 works without a chipped lens, but AF and metering are the costs.  I 
checked the Nikon Page......

But enough of that.... the P+S ( or fixed lens) cameras are another 
option.... I am resisting that option for now.
