IMO, the worst job there is is what I did in a couple of summer breaks
from University - working in a steam laundry - mostly bed-sheets and
blankets from a geriatric hospital and, if we were lucky, from Butlin's
Holiday Camps, unbelievable heat and humidity, and damp bedding is not
light. Loading the steam washers with stinking bedding was not much fun
either (blood, stale urine, puke and other such lovely appetising
smells) - at least when we loaded the container for Butlin's there was
a chance of playing stowaway and getting a weekend at the seaside, once
you were in nobody asked whether you were entitled to meals or
whatever, but getting in was like going through the gates of a prison camp.
Stuck it out for 2 seasons and then got the holiday job of a lifetime -
running the open air pool at Trentham Gardens in Staffordshire - pure
bliss, I'd have done it for nothing, it was that good. Free food, free
rock concerts(Rod Stewart, ELP, Yes, Stones etc. etc)., very pretty
"views", and wages too..
