Laney mentions, in a rather ambiguous sentence, that the US-army placed
an order in 1960 and the cameras were designated M2S , after this order
was cancelled the cameras 1248201 - 1250200 were renamed to M2R and sold
to the general public. It is possible that the camera mentioned belonged
to the batch of M2S before order cancellation. Unfortunately Laney
doesn't mention the serial No. range of the USArmy batch or in what
numbers and years they were produced. The true M2R numbers belong in the
series Greg mentions below, allocated in 1969/70,
So an M2S could be anywhere in the ranges 1161421 - 1163770 and 1164047
- 1164845 for 1966
This would lend some truth to the statement that the camera was a USArmy
camera - but not an M2R, although the model is absolutely identical to
the M2S, ie it has the fast loading three-pronged film spool.M2-R were
engraved as such on the top plate , I've not yet found a picture of a
camera with M2-S engraving. The Leica cameras pocket book mentions the
military version as being a KS 15-4 set.
