I don't bother to save RGB because
a) either I work in Photoshop, then I will save it in .psd format, and
b) if I work in wet print, then it doesn't matter :-)

Anyway, I do not believe you gain any extra information going from 16 bits 
gray to 48 bit RGB from a B&W neg.
