Frank,
I would tend to agree with you.  I was puzzled by the reference to a 
magnesium case.  When I helped my son with the overhaul of a VW engine for a 
friend of his, strictly a low budget effort, I obtained a case from a 
salvage yard.  This case had a hole in it where a broken piston rod had come 
through.  I took the case to a local machine shop and the "old timer" there 
welded up the hole.  I don't believe he could have done this if it had been 
magnesium.  I was not even sure he could weld the aluminum, but he did a 
great job.  The engine took her from Tennessee to her first job, in 
California, and was transferred to another VW later.
