You don't need optical quality gel on the front of a flash. I've used both optical and non-optical quality gel to make filters for lenses. I can't tell a difference. I have homemade IR filters in every size. I removed the nasty UV glass from mostly junk filters replaced it with cutouts from gel I've had forever. I never shot enough IR to justify buying expensive IR filters. Filters that use a screw-in retaining rings work best. Cheaper (most newer) filters use tension rings. You can't tighten them down on the gel. I used to go to a camera show at least once a year for projects like this. Haven't been to one in a few years, though. Are they even still around?
