Older 283s will have a sync voltage in the hundreds of volts. I have heard that the last ones produced had low sync voltages. It is simple to check if you have a digital voltmeter. Turn the flash on and wait about two minutes after the flash ready light has lit. Then simply connect the voltmeter across the two flash foot contacts.
