Be very, very careful. Older 283s will have a sync voltage in the  
hundreds of volts. I have heard that the last ones produced had low  
sync voltages.

It is simple to check if you have a digital voltmeter. Turn the flash  
on and wait about two minutes after the flash ready light has lit.  
Then simply connect the voltmeter across the two flash foot contacts.
