The strange thing about the whirlpool is that even though it was small, about six inches across, it also seemed vaguely threatening... on some primitive level. Have you ever read the short story by Poe, "A Descent into the Maelstrom"? I've only built one boat, a small, eight foot, square-ended dingy and that was in the late 50s.
