weird.....especially since nothing but the back of the head may be in

Consider the case that the lens is actually focused PAST infinity.... yet
more trouble. A portrait with eyes out of focus just looks
weird.....especially since nothing but the tip of the nose may be in
focus.....

No, a lens must be focused correctly.  That takes calibration.
