Philippe,
Right there are all the mistakes to do it wrong!

1) Set camera on automatic... that's everything...... works perfect!
2) In the event you looked at it using 400asa and held the print 12 inches
    from your nose you'd probably see noise! In case you did.;-)
3) Absolutely wrong ASA/ISO setting. It's a time exposure why wouldn't
    you shoot at ASA/ISO 100?

I just finished shooting a series on the cobblestone streets of Lisbon all 
shot at 100 and they are beautiful, done with both the Digilux 2 and the 
Leicanon. And both night and day. The night scenes are magical. ;-)

You just approached the scene in the wrong manner. Now you know how to do it 
right,;-)  (ASA 100) why not go back and re-shoot?;-)
