I don't know that it will explain anything or add to the debate but I think
that the following example may encourage Peter and John who have had mixed
results with C41 b&w films and filters. I think it also endorses what Don
says about the information being on the film but needing something extra to
bring it out.

The problem for me with getting the sky burned in is that the skyline is
usually littered with trees, buildings etc. The join between sky and land
has to be handled in great detail to avoid burning into a flat black
elements of the foreground which overlap onto the sky. I imagine it can be
done pixel by pixel but I for one don't have the patience.

The shot below is less of a problem and although the point at which the
ground and sky meet can be tricky it can be done invisibly enough to pass on
the web. Whether it would look as convincing on a print I will never know
for
sure but I think I could manage it if my life depended on it.
