I have to agree with this as I never use the average mode.  I have found the 
Matrix mode gives a more saturated exposure, which may be just what will 
solve 
the over exposures you are experiencing.  If I am not using the Matrix mode, 
then I use the spot, or selective mode, but never with the Average or full 
screen measurement mode.
