One thing that was truly different about N.O. when compared to other
American (or worldwide) cities is the way N.O. had wealthy areas
that butted right up against impoverished areas. No one in N.O. was
truly isolated from poverty. Drive 5 or 10 blocks and there it was.
Every time I returned, that fact was driven home. It's interesting
that my kids also always always noticed the same thing as soon as
they were old enough to recognize that fact as well.

i am really angered that the national news media seems to be now
focusing on the rich vs. poor aspect of the evacuation so heavily
when that aspect was so far from the average New Orlinean's mind.

Of course New Orleans has it's class conscience groups. I've also
never been in a place where race mattered less if you were a decent
human being- and that applied to 30 years ago as well as now.

Let's don't confuse anger at the animals who are looting and raping
with some form of racism or right wing social engineering.

And believe me. If you ever visited friends in N.O., no one thought
that the riff-raff were hemmed up nearly as well there as they are in
New York or Boston.

>Ah, yes, but it does keep the riff-raff all together in one place, out of
>sight and out of mind - which is the idea - until the Apocalypse. ;-)
