If the river does back up and overflow the levees, it will overflow outside of the levee protection area first. The thing that bothers me about the Superdome is (1) the line to get in is already a mile long, standing in the rain, and (2) it has never been through a category I hurricane, no less a 5. I don't know that the roof will hold up. When they first gently lowered the roof in place back in the early 70's, everyone (including the architects) held their breath hoping that it would not cave in. It didn't but that gives me cause for concern. The city hasn't designated any "last resort" shelters near me, and I think its because we will be on high enough ground. When I bought my house in '92, the mortgage company didn't require that I buy flood insurance. I did anyway. Thanks for your concern, Julian. I definitely am concerned about the next 36 hours. If it is bad enough to get me, then New Orleans will no longer exist as a city...it will be part of Lake Pontchartrain or the gulf.
