Yes, it is a PITA.  You can use a handheld meter with the AI/AIS lenses
on a D70, but the meter readings don't translate so directly. You end
up looking at histograms alot and reshooting.

At least CW metering is so, so much more convenient!!!  Leica should
at least "chip" their lenses for metering compatibility and ease of 
shooting
without adapters.  Avoid the AF issue for now. MF and high quality primes
should actually be a "feature" in the marketing the Leica glass to 
Nikon/Canon
owners.

The Leica glass could very well be like a "prize possesion" for many 
Nikon/Canon
shooter (like owning a Nikkor 28/1.4 or 105/2 or 17-35 or whatever). Just
target and fill the "holes" in the lens lineups.
