Nathan

I can understand your concern about installing additional plugins on your
computer. No one likes to tinker around just to see one new site. But as I
happen to be a flash designer since it's beginnings in the mid-90ies, I
have a few arguments for flash. Flash gives the designer much more
possibilities for creative output than html/dhtml, for instance free choice
of typography, animation and sound features, powerful scripting, and many
other things - all in one tool. Designing with html is like shooting a
sport event with a wooden plate camera. Flash would be the dslr camera in
this comparison. I admit it has has several inconveniences too, like the
required plugin, or simple things like anchor-linking or screen-scrolling
that need labourous additional programming.

I agree that for a simple photogallery, html or php is my choice, too (I'm
still tinkering on mine with php). Nevertheless you can easily downlod the
flash 7.2 player here: http://tinyurl.com/4jw
It's 400KB only and does not require a restart of your computer nor install
any spyware.

See my newest flash work for instance, Lee Cooper Jeans Switzerland
http://www.leecooper.ch/d.php, with draggable semitransparent windows (drag
the little red LC squares), mp3-player, background animations, analog
clock, color/denim-selector - forget this with html. This client paid a lot
of money to have something that looks as good as the swiss Levi's site. I
hope he got it. With a html-only site this would be rather impossible.

To stop unwanted Flash ads on websites I have the web developer toolbar for
Mozilla/Firefox which offers a big "Kill Flash" button. Doesn't kill
always, but mostly. Find it here http://tinyurl.com/e3z5a

Cheers
Didier
