Hi Sonny,
What happens with some of the lads and lasses when they make crop
suggestions is, they've no experience with published work. Like most
magazines are vertical format whether the shooter like's it or not. So we
generally look at shooting in vertical composition and throw in a horizontal
if we feel it looks better in that format. But if you do, the results have
to be equally solid in both formats. You can't just do a throw in shot
because you don't like vertical and prefer the horizontal. Certainly if you
might get paid more for a cover. ;-)

Anyone who shoots stock will always shoot both even not being happy about
both designs, but they'll make them as equally strong a photograph if at all
possible.

Quite often we shoot loose with lot's of space simply because we know the
art director or photo editor we're dealing with wants lots of space so he or
she can crop as the picture is required for publication.

Quite often you shoot with the title of the magazine in mind leaving extra
space at the top even though it may not be the best crop with the
composition as we see it in the view finder.

But the end result quite often dictates how we shoot.

Most of the photo editors over the years were nearly always on my case about
shooting too tight and not leaving space for them to play in design or fit
in type where necessary. But after you've had your knuckles wrapped verbally
a few times you learn to see the picture, leave the space and shoot!

Gotta keep the guys that pay the bills happy whether we like the initial
crop or not. Besides quite often they make us look better through their eyes
than our own. :-)
