A few years ago I had my M2 in for a CLA, and
while it was being serviced I had the metal viewfinder
eyepiece replaced with the M6 eyepiece.  I think the
additional cost was about $60, and I'm glad I did it. 
No further worries about scratched glasses.  BTW, it's
not that the plastic lenses are particularly fragile,
it's that the coatings (esp. anti-reflective) are
susceptible of being scratched.  This can happen 
whether your lenses are glass, the most expensive
Zeiss hi-index plastic lenses, or even cheapo
government- issue VA nerd specs.
