I had an old Nikkor 800 that was truly scary in size. Never shot the lens ( owned it for about 45minutes....) Any old non retro focus lens that had 3 elements or less would be truly incredible for sports or animal photography. Then there were the Nikkor 500 and 800 and 1000mm Mirror lenses. the MTO ( Russian ) mirrors...... that all were good, but had their own issues with being mirror designs... Then there is the famous 43-86 zoom.... that was always considered a woof woof.... but may have enough Bokeh to kill for..... Speaking of Bokeh, have you tried the 58 Nikkor Nocti? that might be fun..... What are you trying to shoot? Birds, sports ( your kids are a bit young for this yet, but you could use the practice), or animals ? You seem pretty "correct" so I would assume your neighbors is not one of the targets...... Are there any Nikon lenses out there that are really good, as in worth buying to use on my Canon 20D? I am only interested in primes.
