Hi George,
My process will no doubt seem pretty unsophisticated by your standards! But
here's what I do:

1) Crop and adjust levels to achieve a good color original
2) Image | Adjustments | Channel Mixer
3) I usually start off with: Red 70%, Green 20%, Blue 10%, Constant 0%
4) Check Monochrome
5) Image | Mode | Grayscale
6) Image | Mode | Duotone
7) Select "Quadtone" in Duotone Options
8) Select your 4 inks. Photoshop comes with some predefined Quadtones,
which can be accessed with the "Load" command. There are "Gray Quadtones",
"Pantone Quadtones", and "Process Quadtones". I use those as starting
points and adjust the colors to get the look I want.
9) Finally, if you want to save the image in JPG or TIFF format (really any
format besides PSD), you will have to convert the image to RGB using the
following command: Image | Mode | RGB

The main reason I use Quadtones is that I seem to be able to get a look that
appears contrasty, and yet has a wider dynamic range with better shadow
detail. George, you could probably explain why Quadtones and Duotones
produce this effect. I'd surely like to learn more from you on this point.

Cheers - Jim Laurel

Can you be more specific re: "converted to Quadtone?" Do you convert to
CMYK and assign "solid" colors or? TIA
