I just bought a Fuji E550 from B&H.  It takes AA batteries, has a usable 
optical viewfinder and fits in my briefcase.  Within the last ten days 
it dropped from $350 to $280, which probably means something newer this 
way comes.

Based on some quick tests I think it will do just fine for a while, 
although it is by no means sturdy.
