Leica Postpones Digital Back
May 12, 2005
By David Schloss
{PDN: Photo District News}
Leica has again delayed their digital back. In a letter to customers, the
company has explained that the software is not yet complete, warranting
further
work.
No date has been set for the release of the back, originally expected to
launch right around now.
The letter from Leica is below.
LETTER FROM LEICA
Dear Sirs/Madams,
Under the following link (http://www.lfi-online.com/shop/sh_index.php) you
will find the first test report on the LEICA DIGITAL-MODUL-R which the
magazine Leica Fotografie International is publishing on the basis of a
pilot model.
You can read report in the issue that will be on sale in the next few days.
In our view, the report confirms the high quality of the unique digital
accessory for our SLR range.
In producing the high standards of quality our customers expect of us, we
make no compromises. However, this forces us to further postpone the first
deliveries of series- produced models which were scheduled for May. The new
delivery date will be communicated at the end of May.
Under the management of the new CEO of Leica Camera AG, Dr. Josef Spichtig,
we are working hard to solve a few last software problems. Although these
do
not impair the basic function of the module, they have to be remedied
before
it is fully ready for production.
We are sorry for the delay, particularly because we know that many
customers
have already placed firm orders and are waiting desperately for the new
product. Despite all the delays, however, we urge our customers not to
overreact.
We are more than ever convinced that the wait for the Digital-Modul-R will
be worthwhile.
