I have an Apple LCD, and color-measuring instruments to make emotionless
judgments of its color-rendering capabilities.

It's better than any CRT costing less than $5000.

It is no longer possible to buy a Mac with a CRT, except low-end stuff aimed
at schools. Apple has stopped making them, because the Apple flat-panel
displays are just so damn good.

There's no reason you can't buy a Mac CPU and some other brand of display
and hook them together; it works fine. But you're on your own with respect
to end-to-end color management; you'll need to get the ICC profile for the
monitor and adjust your Mac to know about it. Not hard, but still necessary.
