Subject: [Leica] Need help pricing sale of photograph

Okay, sports fans.
I just recently joined the LUG. Have been watching and participating with
the discussions. Am enjoying.

The reason I joined is that I was recently given a Leica, an old screw mount
rangefinder as well as some lenses. It was my father-in-law's when he was
alive, he gave it to his daughter when he passed away. My wife when we got
married gave it to me as she knew how much I enjoyed photography.
Up to that point I was using a Canon F1 (old style) with a full complement
of lenses, had been shooting with it for over 25 years. The standard lens I
use is the 17mm, I just love the look of the images captured with this lens.
I also shoot with a Contax RTS with a macro 55, A minilux Leica point and
shoot (love this camera).
In the old days, I used 4x5 and 8x10 view cameras - that was a long time
ago.

I seriously enjoy shooting with the rangefinder - the images are startlingly
sharp.

The leica - #535150 has a Summitar 5cm lens on it. Along with a Canon
Serenar 85mm/f2 and a Canon Serenar 135mm/f4, both screw mounts.
Has the external finder on top that adjusts for different focal lengths
Also a Elmarit f2.8/28 bayonet mount lens. Obviously for a different camera
body.

Now my questions:
Since I enjoy shooting wide angle most if not all of the time, should I be
trading the older body and its lenses in for a newer body that would take
advantage of the bayonet 28mm? And if so, which model should I be looking
for?
As usual, since I am an adjunct professor (teach Film and Video Production),
price is an issue.

Hi Steve,

There are many variables in such a calculation, but to give you an idea,
I logged into Alamy (of which I am a member), picked an image at random
and did some calculations for licensing an image for use in a travel
advertising campaign in a UK national newspaper with a circulation of
100,000.

A couple of examples:
Image size 1/2 page, 10 inserts during 1 month, inside placement:
1886.18 EUR
Same thing but with 1 insert: 410.04 EUR
Same thing but 1 full page: 2263.41 EUR (10 inserts) / 492.05 EUR (1 insert)

The variables that determine the price at Alamy are:
-image size
-image use
-kind of media (e.g. national vs. local paper)
-print run
-placement (cover, inside cover, back cover, inside)
-number of inserts
-duration of campaign
-territory/country
-industry

If you can give me some assumptions about these parameters, I will be
happy to calculate a price for you. I think Alamy is a good guideline
for the UK market. The prices are in EUR because that is the currency I
chose when I signed up with them.
