My wife used to do all development when we had our wedding photo business and usually we had much better results using TMAX 400 and 3200. These are the first films that she has ever developed in Finland and there are few things different here: The water is much harder then it uses to be in Atlanta, GA, where we used to live the last 25 years. We bought the chemical (D76 and not DC70, sorry) from a small photo dealer in the next town (Valkeakoski) and it could be sitting there for over 10 years on the shelf. On the bottom of the can is the number: 22503 93. A new scanner (Epson 4180), although based on this picture: http://gallery.leica-users.org/album166/Katerma_Island_scr the scanner should not be the culprit. In two weeks I will travel to Helsinki and I should be able to get Xtol. I used to able to handhold 1/15 sec with 50 mm lens but I'm afraid I can't do that anymore. I tried that with our digital camera and most of them where blurred. I must be getting old. Thank you for your advice and your pictures are lovely! You can expose and develop for EI 3200 before you get that kind of grain. http://www.dlridings.com/paw2004/38.html At EI 1600 you can't tell too much at all: http://www.dlridings.com/paw2005/3.html I ran out of Tmax this week, and so did the store. So my shots from this week are with HP5 at 1600. Otherwise, Tmax is really a fine film all around. Both in normal situations and when the light is playing hard to get. I ran out of Xtol this week too. But the first shot is still with Tmax, "exposed" at 800 in D76 1:1. I say "exposed" because in situations like this I think: "What can you hand-hold ... 1/15, ok 1/15 wide-open". Not much real metering involved.
