While my children were growing up we always had breakfast and dinner
together - until the kids joined the swim team. Then we had to make
some changes: up well before dawn, back from evening practice about
7:30, it was a struggle to have a family dinner. Sometimes we didn't
make it.

But we always honored meals together. No one ever left the table
without permission, it was always a time to talk, to share, to
discuss. I miss those times. But, when we are together, individually
or all together, we honor meals together - talking and enjoying the
experience. The phone is NEVER answered at dinner - even when my wife
was on the school board. That's FAMILY time.

I think it is one of the best gifts we have given our children: that
there is time that is ours and no one else's. That they can choose to
change their schedule but that we'll adapt, their time with us is
valuable.

As for KFC . . . well I haven't seen the ad but there are people I've
visited whose kids just leave the table, listen to their iPods at
dinner, wear their hats etc etc. Shuddering. Somewhere you learn
respect for a group.
