I've had mine in colder temps without an issue.

I'm wondering if your rangefinder window fogged up.  Or is it possible that
you were holding your M such that your finger was blocking the window?  I
could see that, especially if you're wearing bulkier gloves.  Put your
finger in front of the rangefinder window, and the patch disappears.  I
found out about that when I was first trying out an M.  I couldn't
understand what I was supposed to focus with.  :)
