In the case of both my Nikon Coolscan III and Epson something-flatbed, Hamrick's software works better by factors. It also comes with a raw processor that works well. Personally I have used the Minolta Scan Dual III that way. I think that it is possible to run some scanners without Vuescan, but I don't remember how that is done. ?The list is much less inclusive.
