I had the dame 'halo' problem with my Coolscan III. In my case it was
caused by dust on the internal mirror.

I have a Nikon Cooscan III, and find that slides tend to get a "foggy"
look to them. Negatives with dark objects against a bright sky seem to
get a halo around the dark objects. Nikon really sent no decent
documentation with it, so I've just gutted it out. Mine does allow
previews but they degenerate so much on enlarging them on the screen,
they haven't been useful.
